Aromatherapy 101

There are many benefits to incorporating plant oils into your daily routine.  They function in a way that is similar to
our own bodies, eliminating the bad, fostering the good, and keeping our bodies in balance. This makes them a
great alternative to some medications that, in an attempt to eliminate the bad, kill everything, including the good
flora our bodies depend on for balance.

In fact it is the overuse of things like antibiotics that have caused super-bacterial reactions and aided in the
evolution of super-bacteria that are drug resistant.  While in some cases antibiotics are necessary and have saved
lives, for the everyday minor cuts, scrapes, burns and bug bites, essential oils make fine alternatives. However,
essential oils are chemicals in themselves, not all essential oils are safe, and precautions should be followed.

Precautions
Essential oils are volatile and applied directly to the skin can be irritating.  That's why its important to dilute
essential oils before using them topically.  Dilution is easy.  Add 5 to 10 drops of essential oil to a tablespoon of
carrier oil such as safflower oil or a few ounces of water in a small spray bottle.  Apply a few drops to a damp
washcloth to use as a compress or into a warm bath to relax.  Sprinkle a  few drops on the floor of your shower for
a spa like experience.

Not all essential oils are good for kids!  Essential oils like peppermint and eucalyptus can be too stimulating for a
baby's developing lungs.  For older children ( 4 to 5 years) these essential oils are okay.  Some essential oils like
rose-geranium and clary sage are phytohormones. This makes them great for helping with symptoms of PMS,
menopause, and balancing the hormones, but not so great for kids.

The important thing is to treat essential oils with respect and to do your research. Just because its natural does not
make it safe. Hurricanes and sharks are both natural, that doesn't mean you want them in your bathroom.
Lavender (Lavendula angustifolia)- Although there are many varieties of lavender, the
varietal
Lavendula angustifolia is considered to be the highest quality for aromatherapy
purposes and it the only kind we use. Its herbaceous notes with gentle sweet overtones
make it distinctly familiar and pleasing to the senses.  Lavender is one of the most versatile
essential oils.  It is very calming and a few drops on a cotton ball placed inside a pillow will
prepare the body for sleep without causing drowsiness. This makes it an excellent natural
remedy for those suffering from sleep disorders.  It is also an excellent addition to any first
aid kit.  Lavender is naturally anti-bacterial, anti fungal, and anti-viral that can help keep the
body in balance with out acting as a weapon of mass destruction on that bacteria your body
depends on.
Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)- Rosemary has a fresh, herbaceous, somewhat medicinal
scent.  It helps to bring focus, mental clarity, and improves memory.  It also helps with aching
muscles, rheumatism, and circulation.
Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis) An all around terrific essential oil!  Sweet orange is vibrant,
fresh and uplifting.  Its great for kids and imparts happiness and joy. Or use it in the kitchen.
A few drops on the kitchen sponge will keep it smelling great and bacteria free.
